Bali, or probably Indo in general, is the place most surfers dream of surfing at least once in their lives. It’s hot with warm water and has plenty of waves to choose from wherever you look. From the best waves of your life to everyday beachies and learn to surf spots, there’s something in Bali for everyone.
How to Get There
It’s positioned east of Java, west of Lombok and when you land at Denpasar International Airport, you’re probably (once you clear customs) about 30-45mins from hitting the surf. Not a bad turn around, right?
Flights from the east coast of Australia cost, roughly, about $1000-1250 return (give or take from Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne). Whereas if you’re flying out of Perth, you can find flights for less than half that - but generally you’d be looking at $600 or so.
A visa into the country will set you back $50 USD, so don’t forget to organise that before you fly out. Once out and about into the country, you’ll need to grab a taxi to get wherever you’ve booked your accommodation (there’s plenty of taxi’s out front of the airport).
Best Time of Year to Surf in Bali?
To be honest, you can surf Bali all year round - coast to coast, you’ll find something if you explore long enough. But if you want the best of the best and only have two weeks, etc., then the best time of year is most likely, for everyone, going to be between May and August. You can stretch that out to October if you really want to, but the best conditions - historically - are between May and August.
One last note though - avoid going during school holidays, if you can. I realise that’s not an option for everyone, but when you skip those holidays it’s so much less crowded. Anyways, onto the surfing!
Best Bali Surf Spots
The Bukit
The Bukit Peninsula is at the southern end of the island of Bali and is the area where you’ll find world known spots like Uluwatu, Padang Pandang and Bingin. Three spots that definitely helped put Bali on the map as a surfer’s destination back in the 70s.
All three waves are lefts that break over shallow reefs that will cut you up if you hit. They all differ in their own ways, with Bingin being the more short and sharp barrel and Uluwatu being the larger playing field out of the three.
Beyond those three main waves, there’s several other spots to surf around the area and you can easily post up at the Bukit for your entire stay and be pretty content when leaving. There are great food options up there, accommodation is great and there’s plenty of good waves to be had.
East Coast
The East Coast of Bali has come alive in the last 10-15 years, ever since Andy and Bruce Irons showed up in Slipping Jetstreams, the area that once was a secret was now out on show for everyone. The East Coast is home to Keramas, one of the most famous right handers in Bali, and is touted as one of the best high-performance waves in the world. Along with Keramas, you can find a host of other waves that you’ll need a guide or some solid map tracking to find. Which we encourage, makes getting that carrot all the more sweeter.
The other, amazing, thing about the East Coast is it runs on the opposite season of Bali and is best (offshore) between Dec and March. The catch is that it’s wet, real wet (it’s wet season). Plenty of waves all year around on Bali!
Canggu and beyond…
Once you get over to Canggu, your entire Bali experience can change from being hectic in the streets of Kuta, to some slower moving up in the Bukit to more of a scene in Canggu. Galleries, cafe’s, shops, food, it’s all here along with everyone who is aiming for some level of IG fame.
The flip side is the waves, with there being plenty of waves along this stretch all the way around to the long lefts of Medewi (if you want to look that far). Canggu is an area where you can surf fun waves all day and then head straight out for dinner and drinks after.
The main peak most people surf is a short left and a longer right. You would have seen it numerous times on videos and edits. It’s a decent high-performance wave and can get a wild air wind some days with plenty of our Hurley team boosting nonstop out there!
Where to Surf in Bali for Beginners
If you’re just starting out, or looking to learn, while over in Bali there’s plenty of options for you to get in amongst the waves.
Baby Padang: It’s a reef, which I need to point that out straight up. But it is a soft reef, so it’s not something to be wildly scared of compared to other spots in Bali. It’s a wave that breaks both ways (left and right) and is great for both beginners or surfers chasing their first green wave rides.
Dreamland: Dreamland is, well, dreamy. The setup there is straight out of your imagination of what paradise looks like (warning though, the shorey here is brutal). The wave is fun, easy to surf and the bonus is the social scene at the beach, not many places you can get straight out of the water and straight into the Bali nightlifeKuta: Where it all started, some might argue. But Kuta is the first beach most people link their memories with when Bali is mentioned. It’s not a great wave, but it’s a soft, long wave that will allow all beginners to get some familiarity to the process of getting to your feet and having a good time. Surf here and then wander around town and immerser yourself in downtown Kuta and all its delights.
All in all, Bali is the quintessential surfers travel destination for everyone of every ability. Warm water, friendly locals and an endless supply of affordable accommodation and food to be found. Whatever budget you want to go on it can be accommodated here. Nothing beats a long day surfing in your favourite Phantom boardshorts, followed by long nights eating dirt cheap Nasi Goreng and sinking a few ice-cold Bintangs! Grab your mates, find a week or two in the middle of our Australian winter and escape to the tropics to surf your brains out, what could be better!

Length: Your wetsuit should land right at the cuff of your wrist and ankles. Too short or too long will contribute to discomfort and the flushing of water.
No Excess Material: Your wetsuit should fit as snug as possible for maximum performance. Any excess material will build up slack, leaving room for water to enter your suit and possible chafing when paddling.
Use the chart below to determine your size. If you’re on the borderline between two sizes, order the smaller size for a snug, watertight fit. All body types are different – this scale provides an approximate weight and height range to find your appropriate size.
