A little history for you first about performance boardshorts…
Performance boardshorts kicked into gear around the 70’s with the rise of surf culture at the time. They then evolved a touch through-out the next few decades. However, after the recent turn of the century they really came into their own. We’d like to think we helped kick start that movement with our Phantom Boardshorts. Launched back in 2007 with the Phantom 120, we pushed the technical aspects of boardshorts to new levels with the Phantom series. Over the years we added the inclusion of flywire, certain materials used only by Olympic swimmers and also reactive waistbands. The Phantom Series went on to win multiple awards throughout the Surf Industry around the world, and went on to become the benchmark for performance boardshorts in the surf market.
And now, we’re introducing you to the next phase of the Hurley Phantom Boardshorts.
These are boardshorts you don’t notice when surfing.
These are boardshorts that have that ‘perfect fit’.
These are boardshorts you can surf all day in and won’t let you down.
These are the Hurley Phantom Boardshorts.
What makes Hurley Phantom Boardshorts so amazing?
Say Goodbye to Irritating Seams
Seams have been the cornerstone of boardshort construction since the first pair, but seams have also been the reason we get wild rashes in areas we’d really like not to have rashes. Most of the time, as surfers we just put up with it.
Though, as technology has progressed it’s allowed us to re-look at the functionality of the seam in the world of boardshorts. And we’re now able to produce a pair of new Phantom boardshorts without seams.
The itch and the scratch, the rubbing and the uncomfortable feeling of doing another lap around the points - all because of seams - is now a distant memory.
Our Phantom boardshorts are constructed from 5 panels that are welded together (side note: welding is when the edges of each panel are fused to each other using heat) that ultimately eliminates the rough and jagged edges that you get with stitched seams, leaving you feeling like you’re wearing a feather duster around your loins.
Stretch That Delivers
While having welded seams allow for greater comfort, we also need to consider the functional aspect that boardshorts need to deliver on. And that’s movement, stretch and flexibility.
One of the pillars that the Hurley Phantom Boardshorts have been built upon is the ability to stretch, flex, and adjust with you while you’re surfing (or which water sport you’re playing in). Since we started the Phantom line, we’ve been working tirelessly to ensure we deliver market leading 4-way stretch and comfort in our boardshorts and while the awards we’ve won for them are nice, it’s the feedback from consumers who are surfing in them that make us the happiest.
So, regardless if you’re doing some wild cut backs, trimming down the line or just throwing a big slob air rev into the mix, the Phantom Boardshorts will move with you without you even noticing them.
Material with a Difference
Welded seams. Check.
Stretch and flexibility. Check.
But what about the materials?
Whilst it’s nice to be chasing tubes, or trimming across green faces nonstop all day with no rashes or even a moment of uncomfortableness, what about the materials?
The Phantom Material is designed to be lightweight, quick drying (along with stretchy and flexible) so if you need to go from the beach to a quick catch up, they’ll be dry before you even get in the car.
In today’s world, we all need to be doing our part to help minimise our impact on the planet, and for a lot of what we do that comes down to the materials we use for the products you get to surf in. Lightweight and quick drying aside, we’re also proud to say that most of our Phantom boardshorts are produced from recycled materials. Nice, right?
We know we have a way to go to get our sustainable processes fully sorted and dialled, but we’re moving in the right direction one Phantom Boardshort at a time!
Overall, we’ve built our Phantom Boardshorts to be a transformation on the everyday swim shorts you’re used to. Whether you’re surfing, swimming or playing on the beach, we’ve got you playing at the highest level of comfort and flexibility possible. Length: Your wetsuit should land right at the cuff of your wrist and ankles. Too short or too long will contribute to discomfort and the flushing of water.
No Excess Material: Your wetsuit should fit as snug as possible for maximum performance. Any excess material will build up slack, leaving room for water to enter your suit and possible chafing when paddling.
Use the chart below to determine your size. If you’re on the borderline between two sizes, order the smaller size for a snug, watertight fit. All body types are different – this scale provides an approximate weight and height range to find your appropriate size.
