Yoko Georgiou Joins Hurley's Art Department
Introducing Yoko Georgiou to Hurley's Art Department range. Yoko is a multi-disciplinary artist hailing from Niigata, Japan, who now calls the Surf Coast of Victoria her home. With a diverse skill set spanning textile design, tufting, papercraft, and painting, Yoko explores the realm of comprehensibility through tangible creations. Her innovative work finds expression in Hurley's Art Department range, reflecting a fusion of cultural influences and artistic prowess.
Q1. Yoko, firstly, what inspired the pieces in your Art Department Range?

My inspiration for this range all comes from the ocean. Zebra moray, kelp seaweed, a trail that a sea snail made – those patterns and shapes are so fascinating and simply beautiful to me. The ocean is a place of endless wonder.


Q2. How does the unique atmosphere of the Victorian Surf Coast influence the creation of your artworks?

Living on the Surf Coast hugely influences my artwork. When I lived in Tokyo or Melbourne, my inspiration mainly came from my childhood memory-based imagination. After moving to the Surf Coast and being surrounded by nature, my inspiration source naturally shifted to the ocean and my surroundings. I grew up on the coast in Japan in a rural town, not dissimilar to some of the towns down here. So, in a way, I feel like I am getting back to my roots, back to the source of my creative and general life inspiration. I feel very at home here and I think that translates directly into my work.


Q3. Do the ocean and surfing inspire and shape your creative process?

One hundred per cent they do! I don’t surf, only sometimes in summer, but I often go to watch my husband and daughter surf. When I am at the beach or on the cliffs watching them, I take in the details of everything. How the surfboard splashes the water, body movement, how waves crash, how water drags the sand and makes some kind of illusion, sea anemone swinging, volcanic rock texture, the contours of the clay cliffs, the windswept shrubs – it all goes into my artwork.


Q4. Your portfolio seamlessly integrates handmade techniques with digital artistry. How do these diverse approaches complement each other to bring your creations to life?

I’m an analogue person; I like the tangibility. Generally, the projects that I work on, I want them to be useful in everyday life, to be real and to serve a purpose. But digital is great; it needs to be used when it comes to design. When I make rugs, I sketch on my iPad a lot, I sometimes draw in a sketchbook too, but on the iPad, I can manage my colour palette better – it is more efficient. Both digital and analogue – if balanced with consideration – can complement each other. There is a point in my process where I need to transition using my hands; I will not change that ever, if I do I think that my pieces will lose their natural feeling.
Q5. Both Melbourne and Tokyo are renowned for their dynamic art scenes. How have these two locales influenced the evolution of your artistic direction and style?

Between 2006 and 2013, I was moving back and forth between Tokyo and Melbourne a lot; at that time, it felt like I was observing both creative scenes in the third person. It’s hard to explain – I was part of them, but also removed from both. Japan & Melbourne have great energy in their creative worlds, and I soaked up so much of that, wherever I was living. After moving to the Surf Coast in 2018, taking a step back from any kind of big city scene and having more time and space, I was able to see my artistic vision a lot clearer and was able to move forward and consolidate my style. Of course, I still have so much love for Tokyo and Melbourne and so many good friends in both cities, but I feel like it all came together for me down here in Torquay.


Q6. Do you have a personal favourite among the pieces in your collection? If so, what makes it stand out to you?

To be honest, I like all of them; they came out exactly as I envisioned, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be the knitted jumper. It’s a big all-over kelp seaweed design and has different colours on the front and back; it’s fun! I also feel like because it’s knitted as opposed to printed it is kind of like one of my rugs; I approached that piece with that process in mind. I hope that it will come in handy when you go to the beach for a walk on a windy day.
